PPWR im Überblick

Designing PPWR-compliant PET packaging

As a PET bottle manufacturer in Germany, EPROPLAST provides practical support to customers in implementing the PPWR – from consulting to series-ready solutions.

PPWR at a glance – facts and figures

Schedule

  • February 11, 2025: Regulation enters into force
  • August 12, 2026: mandatory application
  • 2030: Recycling and recycled material requirements come into force
  • 2040: higher minimum proportions of recycled material

Waste reduction

  • Target: 15% less packaging waste by 2040 compared to 2018
  • Packaging should be weight and volume optimized.
  • Empty space may not exceed 50%.

Recyclability

  • All packaging must be recyclable.
  • Classification:
    • Class A: ≥ 95 % recyclable
    • Class B: ≥ 80 % recyclable
    • Class C: ≥ 70 % recyclable
  • From 2038 onwards, only packaging of classes A or B may be placed on the market.

Labeling & Disposal

  • From 2028, clear symbols for material composition
  • Consumers should be able to correctly separate and dispose of packaging.

7. Extended producer responsibility

  • Manufacturers are responsible for the entire life cycle of packaging.
  • Responsibilities: Documentation, reporting, and financial contributions where applicable

Why PET packaging and rPET are ideal

PET as a monomaterial already meets many PPWR requirements today:

  • Recyclable and sortable
  • High quality standards for food and cosmetics
  • Versatile, e.g., hot-fill bottles
  • Transparent PET particularly easy to recycle
  • rPET bottles meet the mandatory minimum percentages of recycled material.

Design for Recycling enables packaging to be designed efficiently: less material, better recycling, optimized transport volume.
