PET bottles illustrated on the subject of the PPWR, the EU packaging regulation

PPWR – Die ersten Schritte zur Umsetzung

Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR): Are you ready for implementation?

The Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) will fundamentally change the requirements for packaging in the EU. Many companies are facing the challenge of adapting their packaging strategies accordingly. But don't worry, there are two concrete steps you can take to successfully master the new requirements.

Step 1: Take stock of your packaging

Before you make any changes, you should first get an overview of your current packaging portfolio. Here are three key steps:

1. Analyse your packaging portfolio

A comprehensive analysis of your existing packaging material is the first step towards PPWR compliance. Which materials do you use? Where is there potential for improvement? These questions should be at the centre of your analysis.

2. Identify packaging in need of customisation

After the analysis, you should specifically identify the packaging that does not comply with future regulations. Is there packaging that has too much empty space or is not recyclable? You should prioritise these in your strategy.

3. Check the recyclability

One of the most important aspects of the PPWR is the recyclability of packaging. Make sure that your packaging meets the requirements and can be processed in the existing recycling loops.

Step 2: Customise your packaging strategy

1. Material reduction

A key aspect of PPWR is the reduction of packaging materials. Develop strategies to reduce the amount of material used without compromising product quality or protection. Lighter and slimmer packaging is the key here.

2. Optimisation of the packaging void space

The regulation requires a maximum empty space quota of 50 %. You should therefore check how efficiently the space in your packaging is being utilised. Adjusting the packaging sizes can lead to a reduction in empty space and therefore to a more efficient use of resources.

3. Increase the proportion of recycling

Another important step is to increase the proportion of recycled material in your packaging. This not only supports the circular economy, but also helps to meet the growing demands for sustainability.
